McDonald’s satisfy our mixed desires

When we go to a new place, we often have a mixed desire, that is, the desire for exploring something new as well as the desire for doing exactly what we have done before. When some of my friends go to another countries, for example, they almost always try exotic dish at local restaurants but they end up searching for Starbucks for coffee with free Wifi. Since the mixed desire is relatively opposite, it is usually satisfied by two very different products or places. 

However, a mixed desire can be well satisfied when we buy or meet appropriately localized, global products or places. One example is McDonald’s, the biggest food chain brand in the world. Although it is now competing against Subway, it still beats other well known brands such as KFC, Burger King, Pizza Hut, to name a few.

Although McDonald’s is known for serving highly standardized food items and thus does not seem to be a hot place for eating something new, it actually has interesting local items in different countries.

In Bangkok, for instance, a McDonald’s with a clown who puts his hands together serves a few rice sets with pork, chicken, and beef.

In Copenhagen, a McDonald’s opens 24 hours 7 days. Although this sounds rather common in most Asian cities, running a business for whole night is very uncommon in Scandinavian countries.

In Delhi, a McDonald’s divides its space into two different stations -one for vegetarians and the other for meat lovers- and then people and kitchen utensils are not allowed to come across these two stations including knife, cutting board, or water. 

Recently, a group of researchers studied which experiences result in the greatest happiness between ordinary (common and frequent) and extraordinary (uncommon and infrequent) experience. They found that “younger people, who view their future as extensive, gain more happiness from extraordinary experiences; however, ordinary experiences become increasingly associated with happiness as people get older, such that they produce as much happiness as extraordinary experiences when individuals have limited time remaining.”

The research findings suggest why McDonald’s appeals to everyone. It appeals to younger people because of different products and services across countries. At the same moment, it may appeal to older people because it is same across countries.

  1. “Big Mac and ?”

    The author argues that when people go to new places, they have mixed desire, that is, they want to experience something new but simultaneously seek the familiar. McDonald’s fulfills this desire excellently because it is a global fast-food chain that offers standardized menus while also having localized items. I agree with this claim.

    There are frequent cases where companies fail to localize properly due to a lack of understanding of local cultures, leading to market withdrawal. In contrast, McDonald’s localization efforts are remarkable. The most familiar example for us is the Korean “Bulgogi Burger.” When I was young, I thought McDonald’s was a Korean company because it had a menu item using Korea’s traditional food, bulgogi.

    I first realized McDonald’s localized menu when I visited McDonald’s in Japan. Unable to read Japanese, I picked the menu that looked the most familiar. It tasted very familiar and basic, as expected. Later, I found out that the menu was called a “Teriyaki Burger.”

    The top of McDonald’s localization efforts can be found in France. Because It’s a gourmet country, McDonald’s faced challenges when it first entered the market. To overcome this, McDonald’s used French ingredients and adapted recipes to French tastes. They especially worked hard to raise the quality of their dessert menu to match France’s rich dessert culture. As a result, McDonald’s burgers, once dismissed as junk food, became a simple yet delicious meal for French office workers. These localization efforts by McDonald’s satisfy the “mixed desire” of both locals and foreign travelers.

    Whenever I travel abroad, I have a routine of visiting McDonald’s in that country. I always order a Big Mac and one localized menu item. The Big Mac has been sold since 1967, 27 years after McDonald’s was founded. The specificity of this menu is that it is common in the world. While McDonald’s offers localized menus in each country, the Big Mac is sold with similar size and quality everywhere. There’s even an economic term called the “Big Mac Index,” which measures currency values based on the price of a Big Mac in different countries.

    My travel companions always ask me why I eat the same Big Mac even when I’m abroad. Honestly, there’s no special reason. I just want to do it. I think the author’s idea of “mixed desire” explains my behavior well. The contrast between the familiar Big Mac and the local menu of the country gives me experience of culture “Gently”.

    I look forward to traveling to more countries and visiting McDonald’s in each one to fulfill my “mixed desire”
